Saraswathi culture class on 3/21/10

Dear students,
The topic for this week is 'Indian Dance'. As you all know India is home to a amazing variety of dances, both classical and folk. Dance forms have evolved over the centuries and is an integral part of the rich Indian culture. Please do some research about any of your favorite dances and come prepared to give a talk to the class. Pictures are welcome as well. If any of you is learning a dance, please give us a demo.

Saraswathi class on 3/7/10

Dear students,
Instead of Intermediate (Saraswathi) Religion, we will have culture class on March 7th and on March 14th you will have Culture class in place of the Religion class. The topic for this week is 'Great Indian monuments'. India is a country that is studded with many great and famous monuments, some of which are really old. Please come prepared about your favorite monument from your native state in India. If you can bring some pictures or models, it would be wonderful and you share them with the rest of the class.

Please don't prepare about Taj Mahal as we have covered it before.

Sarasathi class on 2/21/2010

Dear students,
Since towards the end of this month we celebrate Holi, the topic for the class this Sunday is 'Holi and other festivals of India'. Write up about how you have celebrated Holi or how it is celebrated in the part of India where your family comes from. You are welcome to bring pictures if you want. If you want to write about a different favorite festival of yours, you may do so. I want some effort from the boys this time.

Saraswati culture class on 02/14/10

Dear students,
Our topic for the next class is "Indian Arts and Crafts". There is a huge variety of 'Arts and Crafts', in different parts of India, like pottery, textile, carpets, carvings, leather work, rangoli, embroidery etc. Prepare an article about what art / craft is famous in or around the state from where your parents hail. You are encouraged to bring some work from India and share it with everyone in the class. In particular if you had a chance to do the work yourself, it will be great to see that. This way we can all learn about arts and crafts from the different regions of the country.

Intermediate culture class on 2/7/10

Dear students,
The topic for the class this Sunday is "Famous Indian Authors- Book discussion". You can come prepared to the class about a famous author from India or better still narrate a short story or excerpt from the author's famous book. You may present about any famous book written by the author. It could an author from your parents' native state in India. That way we can learn about authors from different parts of India.

Saraswati Culture class on 01/24

Dear students,
This sunday the topic of discussion is 'Independence of India and formation of Republic'. Please come prepared with a write up about some of the most significant events that lead to India's independence in 1947, mainly focusing on the period between 1900-1947. You may also include the post independence period from 1947 to 1950 when India became a republic. I hope to see maximum participation in the class on this interesting topic.

Saraswati Culture Class on 01/10/2010

Dear students,
The next intermediate culture class on 01/10/2010 is about 'Indian Poets'. India is country where many languages are spoken and over the centuries she has produced many a great poet in these languages.

In this class I would like all the girls to come up with a 1/2 page write up on any poet who lived in ancient and medival India -- before 16th century AD like Valmiki, VedaVyas, Kalidas, Thiruvalluvar, Avvaiyar etc. And all the boys should present about a poet who lived during later time -- from 16th century to the present time like Tulsidas, Surdas, Kabir, Meera, Tagore, Sarojini Naidu, Mirza Ghalib etc

I would like maximum participation from both sides and let us make it a contest!
